Extension rules in plain English (2026)

Under guidance reflected in major travel advisories since 1 January 2025:

  • Initial tourist stay: up to 30 days from arrival
  • In-country extensions: two allowed
  • Typical maximum add-on: 60 days (often 30 + 30)
  • Practical total stay on tourist status: about 90 days
  • Visa-exempt entries: usually cannot be extended the same way

If you do not extend within the permitted window, penalties can be severe—UK advice cites a fine on the order of USD 2,000 (kip equivalent), deportation, and a re-entry ban. 66VISA’s position is simple: extend early, never gamble on overstay.

Who can extend?

Holders of extendable tourist visas—including eVisa, visa on arrival, and embassy-issued tourist visas—are the core group. Bring the passport that carries your current stamp. If you are on LA-B2 or another long-stay category, renewal follows a different labour/immigration track—ask us before joining a tourist queue.

Documents to carry

  1. Valid passport with your current Laos entry/visa
  2. One recent photo (commonly 3×4 cm at immigration counters—carry spares)
  3. Kip for official fees
  4. Your phone with hotel address and our WhatsApp if you want assisted pickup

Official fees vs assisted service

Immigration commonly charges around 20,000 LAK per day of extension plus a service/document fee (figures around 30,000–40,000 LAK appear in recent traveler and embassy summaries—confirm at the counter). A full 30-day extension often lands near 600,000+ LAK in official fees alone.

66VISA assisted tourist extension: approximately USD 90—useful when you value time, translation, and a clean handoff. Message +856 20 9999 7573 to book.

Where to extend in Vientiane

The capital’s Immigration / Foreigner Control counters are the most predictable option. Provincial offices in Luang Prabang, Pakse, and elsewhere also process extensions, but timing varies. Weekdays only; expect lunch closures. Arrive several days before expiry—not the morning your stamp dies.

Pro move: Keep a ride waiting. Offices are not always on a simple walking route, and outbound taxis can be scarce at midday.

Step-by-step with 66VISA

  1. WhatsApp your passport bio page, entry stamp photo, and desired extension length.
  2. We confirm eligibility and timing.
  3. You meet us at Harmony Hotel or we coordinate document handoff.
  4. Filing and fee payment proceed per immigration rules.
  5. You collect the passport when ready—often 1–2 working days in Vientiane.

Extension vs border run

A Thailand border run resets a tourist stay only after you exit and re-enter with a new visa. It costs transport time and does not replace a lawful extension if you still have extension credits left. For many clients, using both extensions first is cleaner—then exit if you need a fresh 30 days. There is no public “unlimited re-entry guarantee”; treat repeat entries as discretionary.

When extension is the wrong tool

  • You started working without LA-B2 → stop and fix status; do not “extend tourism” over employment.
  • You are already past day limits → seek advice immediately; do not DIY at the border with an expired stamp.
  • You need multi-month certainty → discuss LA-B2 packages (from USD 640 / USD 840, renewals ~USD 540) and invitations (~5 workdays).

A sample extension calendar

Imagine you entered on 10 July. Day 30 falls around 8 August. Ideal filing window: 1–5 August. First extension to 7 September. Second extension filing in early September toward early October. That rhythm yields ~90 days without leaving—if both extensions are granted and you never overstay a weekend closure.

Build buffers for Lao public holidays. If your stamp expires on a Monday after a long weekend, the mistake happened the previous Wednesday.

Soft signals that you should call us sooner

  • Your only free weekday is the expiry date
  • You are outside Vientiane with unreliable transport
  • Your passport has fewer than two blank pages
  • You already started informal work conversations
  • A friend “did a border run yesterday” and you want to copy them blindly

66VISA would rather reschedule a coffee than repair an overstay.

Concierge extension etiquette

Handing 66VISA your passport is a trust moment. We:

  • Confirm remaining lawful days before accepting the file
  • Photograph bio page and current stamp for our working set
  • Provide an expected collection window
  • Message you the moment immigration returns the passport
  • Ask you to verify the new expiry before you leave Harmony Hotel

Please do not plan international departures on the collection morning without buffer. Please do not begin paid local work on tourist status while we extend leisure stays. Clarity keeps both your travel and our boutique reputation intact.

For stays beyond two extensions, we discuss exit/re-entry or LA-B2—never a fictional third tourist top-up.

If you are planning leisure travel to the Lao PDR this year, the documentation bar is straightforward—but unforgiving when you miss a detail. This guide sets out Laos tourist visa requirements for 2026 in plain terms, then shows how 66VISA at Harmony Hotel, Vientiane, keeps your file clean from first WhatsApp to entry stamp.

What changed going into 2025–2026

From 1 January 2025, tourist stays reverted to 30 days from the date of arrival (after a temporary longer-stay experiment in prior years). That rule still frames planning in 2026. You may generally extend twice while in Laos—up to 60 extra days—if you hold an extendable tourist visa rather than a pure exemption stay.

Separately, the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) rolled out from September 2025 at major checkpoints (Wattay, Luang Prabang, Pakse, and Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge I), with wider coverage expected. LDIF replaces paper arrival/departure cards at those ports. It is not a visa.

Tourism itself is expanding: Lao sector projections for 2026 point toward 5–6 million visitors, with Chinese arrivals targeted near 2 million, helped by the China–Laos railway. More arrivals mean fuller eVisa queues and busier VOA desks—prepare early.

Who needs a Laos tourist visa?

Most ordinary-passport holders need a visa unless they qualify under a bilateral visa exemption. ASEAN and other exemption rules vary by nationality and passport type—never assume. Nationalities barred from eVisa and visa on arrival must obtain a visa from a Lao embassy or consulate before travel.

66VISA tip: Send your nationality and travel dates on WhatsApp +856 20 9999 7573. We confirm the correct channel before you book non-refundable tickets.

Core document checklist (2026)

  • Passport valid 6+ months from arrival (eVisa guidance often cites more than 180 days) — Short validity = refused eVisa or boarding denial
  • At least two blank pages (airline/immigration practicality) — Stamp and visa space
  • Recent passport photo (eVisa commonly 4×6 cm, last 6 months) — Application rejection if wrong size/quality
  • Colour scan of passport bio page — eVisa upload
  • Proof of onward plan / funds — Occasionally requested; carry digital copies
  • LDIF submission within 3 days before arrival (designated ports) — Speeds immigration; does not replace visa
  • Same passport used for eVisa at entry — Mismatch can mean denial

We do not invent “extra” documents for vanity—only what your channel and nationality require.

Channel A: Lao eVisa

The official Lao eVisa is currently for tourist purposes, single entry, with a stay of up to 30 days from arrival. Apply online ahead of travel (system rules historically require applying at least several days before arrival and within a maximum window before your arrival date—verify live on laoevisa.gov.la when you apply).

Strengths: Skip the VOA queue; use eVisa lanes where offered. Watch-outs: Only enter via eVisa-designated ports. If you arrive at an undesignated crossing, you may be forced into VOA and the eVisa fee is typically non-refundable. Designated ports include major airports and selected land/rail points—confirm your exact crossing.

Approval-letter validity governs when you may enter, not how long you may stay. Stay length counts from the arrival stamp.

Channel B: Visa on arrival (VOA)

Eligible travelers can obtain a single-entry tourist visa on arrival at Wattay (Vientiane), Luang Prabang, Pakse, and many international land borders. Bring cash as required locally, a photo, and patience at peak hours.

66VISA view: eVisa is often the calmer premium choice for airport arrivals; VOA remains practical for spontaneous land borders—if your nationality qualifies.

Airport vs land border vs railway

  • Airports — Usually the most predictable VOA/eVisa experience.
  • Friendship Bridge I — High volume; LDIF in force.
  • Other land borders — Rules and eVisa acceptance vary; verify 48 hours before you leave the Thai, Vietnamese, or Cambodian side.
  • China–Laos railway — Cross-border passenger trips rose sharply in 2026 (reports of 244,000 trips in the first eight months, up ~50% year-on-year). Arrive with the correct visa for the port you will clear—do not improvise at Mohan/Boten.

How long can you stay—and can you extend?

Initial tourist stay: up to 30 days. Extensions: commonly two, up to 30 days each, toward a ~90-day in-country total. Assisted tourist extension with 66VISA is positioned around USD 90. Official immigration fees are paid in kip (per-day plus service fee).

Overstay consequences can include heavy fines (UK advice references a fine on the order of USD 2,000 in kip equivalent if you fail to extend within the allowed window), deportation, and re-entry bans. We treat compliance as non-negotiable.

Where LA-B2 fits (and where it does not)

Tourist visas are for tourism. Employment and technical placements use LA-B2 and related permits. If your real purpose is work, say so early—we will route you to the labour pathway (developed packages from USD 640; India & developing from USD 840; renewals ~USD 540). Mixing purposes is how files get delayed.
